Calvary Cross

The time has come and I must leave

Force my burden up the hill

The crowd unsure: I start, I stop

Drag my cross by force of will

Last resting place in blazing sun

From Pilate’s hands I’m washed away

Not any crime did I commit

The Law demanding the last say

In turn the soldiers hold me fast

Each nail tears sinews, ripping in

A throbbing crimson fills my eyes

I cannot think: I bear no sin

The ropes pulled rough. I’m hanging stiff

The midday sun fills up the sky

The heat. The pain my weight it brings

I told the truth and I must die

Watch after Mother Mary, friend

I Convulse in violent agony

Swollen veins and throbbing pulse

A Crown of thorns for infamy

Both my companions call to me

If I’m of God to save myself

I am of God but also man

That knowledge is my only wealth

And still the torment’s end won’t come

The crowd stand waiting patiently

On searing knives my nerves cry out

Oh Father why have you forsaken me?

At last I feel the pains relief

I see I’m slipping from this world

My eyelids shut round rolls head sweat

My broken body sagging, curled

Vinegar wine; I raise my head

All is slipping as I bow

A last look up at Heaven’s Gate

Father take my spirit now

Black thunder rolls, blue sky turns pitch

A thousand choral sweet refrains

I’m lifted up on unseen wings

Into the light and home again

The pouring rain: the storm clouds chase

Away all those who stood and stared

Now silence mixed with water falls

Soaking those few friends who cared

Three days will pass twixt death and life

Before I return: for some to see

That I have risen conquered death

I’ll show you in Gethsemane
